Mendocino County
Super Skunk train celebrates 92nd birthday
Mendocino County is one of the most beautiful in California and one of the best ways to enjoy this part of Northern California is to board the Super Skunk train, a steam locomotive built in 1924.

Millions of people have ridden the train during its more than 50 years of operation along this part of Mendocino County. The Skunk Train Company actually purchased the locomotive in 1964. You may have read "The Story of the Super Skunk," written by Janet Grundman a local teacher.

The train can be boarded in Fort Bragg or in Willitts. The train is a fun daytrip -- or rather, partial day -- and chugs along the tracks through spectacular mountain and ocean vistas. Steam trains are great family outings -- the entire family will find this little bit of railroad history entertaining and a fun diversion from the usual modes of transportation. When visiting the area, call ahead for the schedule so that you can optimize your visit.

When in the area be sure to visit Mendocino, a picturesque coastal village with unsurpassed views of the Pacific Ocean. This charming town was the filming site for Murder She Wrote, where it stood in for a New England coastal village. Today, Mendocino boasts dozens of bed-and-breakfast inns as well as gourmet dining. Most importantly, Mendocino offers the opportunity to walk along some of the most scenic shoreline in all of California.

Be sure and take in the Super Skunk Train -- don't miss this opportunity to ride the rails through the Redwoods, one of the most spectacular regions of America.
