60 years
Disneyland Diamond Celebration starts May 22
Who can believe it’s been 60 years since Disneyland 1California greeted its first wide-eyed guests to its revolutionary new park in Anaheim? On May 22 of this year, the iconic theme park begins an anniversary celebration that will stretch well into next year. Just in case you forgot Disneyland is there, you’ll be reminded it’s still very much alive and, from all accounts, continues to attract throngs of tourists.

In fact, it may be attracting too many tourists according to some longtime park-goers. The crowds are bigger, the lines are longer (although the park does have some ways to shorten your wait) and the prices certainly are higher than ever. A one-day adult ticket now costs $99, mercifully short of the $100 mark – for now.

But if you visit during the 60th Anniversary Celebration, the park is dressed up for the occasion with Sleeping Beauty Castle at Disneyland Park and Carthay Circle at Disney California Adventure Park both transformed with special Diamond Celebration enhancements. Locations like Buena Vista Street and Main Street USA will have new décor just for the Diamond Celebration.

Disneyland Forever is a new fireworks show intended to wow audiences even more than the usual fireworks show. The Disney Paint the Night Parade has more than one million lights, substantially more than before. A special exhibit will celebrate the Wonderful World of Walt Disney and the TV magic many of the older generation witnessed as kids.

Be sure and bring your pocketbook because there will be hundreds of new types of merchandise to purchase, all emblazoned with the Diamond Celebration logo.

And just for good measure, the resort is awarding diamonds to guests who win a special contest – very clever, indeed. Diamond Celebration, giving away diamonds – what will those Disney people think of next?
