Three CA lakes ranked in Top 10 lake vacationsCalifornia may be suffering through a long-term drought but the state's lakes still rank very high with the traveling public, according to results compiled by Yahoo Travel. The state grabbed three of the top 10 spots in the country in the 2014 study.
Lake Tahoe was ranked as the No. 1 best lake vacation in the country, closely followed by Big Bear Lake at No. 3, and Shasta Lake at No. 6.
The survey's results are based on the number of searches done on Yahoo that reference those lakes.
As one of the largest lakes in the West, it's no surprise that Lake Tahoe came in No. 1. The lake is in an area surrounded by gorgeous mountain scenery, yet is close to a medium-size city, Reno, Nevada. Hotels and resorts have sprung up all over the lake, with many concentrated in the South Lake Tahoe area, on the California side of the lake. A large selection of vacation homes are available also to take advantage of the lake's many water activities. During winter, skiers and snowboarders find a wide assortment of world-class ski resorts near Lake Tahoe.
Big Bear Lake's proximity to Los Angeles makes it highly popular with that city's residents who find they can be at Big Bear in less than three hours and enjoy a completely different climate as well as a small-town atmosphere. Big Bear also offers skiing in the off-season.
Shasta Lake has resorts and lodges, but also is known for its robust houseboat industry. Families can rent houseboats by the week or weekend and enjoy cruising to the many coves and inlets that are ideal for beaching their houseboat. Winter sports also are big in the Shasta Lake area.
